St. Conan's Kirk

One of my favorite things about driving around Scotland is that all of the awesome churches are kept open during the week for tourists to come in and look around. In a land with so many incredible church buildings, it is a blast to wander around a place as beautiful as that with no one around. When we were driving back to Aberdeen from Oban we saw this Kirk on a loch and decided to pull over and take a look. We're glad we did.

St. Conan's was fantastic. It was a bit run down at places, but as you can tell from the pictures it was beautiful. You could see it from the castle we posted about last time from across the loch.

Part of the beauty of the place was that it was nestled in the woods on the edge of a loch and didn't really draw any attention to itself. Once again, this is one of those places in Scotland you can only really come across by accident, which makes driving around such a great time.

We don't have a picture of it here, but the altar area was rounded and had glass windows overlooking the loch. It is still a fully functioning Kirk, but I imagine it has a dwindling congregation. Too bad, it must be cool to go to a place like that every Sunday!

YES! This kirk was one of our favourite discoveries when we drove out to the west coast. I'm so glad you guys found it. We spent well over an hour here taking photos and exploring and I think it's one of the coolest churches we've seen in Scotland (though Dean will say it's Roslyn Chapel). This was a great reminder :)
